Akiva, before the acquisition, I had made a conscious decision to not share my reader. I had plenty of other places for social news, and Google reader was my quiet place online to read and do research. It’s my online version of a home den or at the very worst a public library. Like many others are since the acquisition, I wanted to find an alternative, but not necessarily an equal to friendfeed. When it was suggested that Google reader might be a suitable alternative, I had no problem changing my policy and giving it a try. Unfortunately, from what I’ve seen so far, it not only fails in its attempt to be a social platform, but in doing so, it compromises many of the things that I currently like about it. You’re correct in saying that the user interface is lacking, in fact that’s an understatement. I came to the same conclusion recently after using feedly for a while; which has a beautiful UI. Every time I found myself back in reader without feedly, it made me wonder why Google hasn’t acquired them yet. Like you, I would like to see this work, and I will continue to try to use it and give feedback whenever possible.
